Detroit Accessible Housing Learning Series (Virtual)

Virtual - zoom

The City of Detroit's Housing and Revitalization Department and Detroit Disability Power invite you to the upcoming Detroit Accessible Housing Learning Series!

This is a free online series of 2-hour events featuring best practices to better finance, design, develop, and manage highly accessible units (flier attached). The series is open to those involved in the Detroit housing space, including Detroit developers, property managers, designers, architects, building inspectors, community development organizations, and housing nonprofits! Learn from local and national experts on the best ways to support residents with disabilities and those aging in place.

The Accessible Housing Learning Series will take place across Fridays in June and July. The dates are June 21st and 28th, and July 12th and 26th from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST. You can find more information about each session below and RSVP here!

· Session 1 "Status Quo": Accessible Housing in Detroit, Friday 6/21 from 12-2pm EST. This session serves as an introduction to the training series and the basic concepts needed for working on issues impacting people with disabilities. It includes major findings from a 2024 study on accessible housing in Detroit, an overview of current policies and requirements regarding housing accessibility, and debunking common myths about housing accessibility and the disability community.

· Session 2 "Accessibility and Universal Design: Breaking Down the Buzzwords": Friday 6/28 from 12-2pm EST. This session dives deeper beyond the minimum design requirements from Session 1, and provides important concepts that are necessary for developing inclusive and accessible housing for people with disabilities now and in the future.

· Session 3 "Financing & the Cost of Accessibility": Friday 7/12 from 12-2pm EST. This session aims to focus on how developers can effectively finance accessibility features, what is available to cover those costs, and how such costs are outweighed by the value-add of accessible and inclusive design approaches.

· Session 4 "Connecting People with Disabilities to Accessible Housing": Friday 7/26 from 12-2pm EST. This session focuses on how to provide support to individuals with disabilities in the process of finding accessible housing based on their specific needs. It also provides guidance on policy solutions to make more funds available and to incentivize accessible development.

· Field Visit: In addition to the four online workshops, participants will be invited to a field visit to experience and witness accessible design firsthand. More information about our field visit after registration closes.

Let’s plan for and build an accessible future together!
