Recent WHA Endorsements

Jessilyn Averill

The Washtenaw Housing Alliance encourages other organizations and community members to join us in endorsing the following initiatives.

  • Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (AAATA)’s 2022 Service and Millage Proposal – see endorsements here.

Vote YES on transit this August 2!

Affordable housing and public transportation are critical to increasing community connectivity and equity. AAATA’s service and millage proposal for a 5-year, 2.38 mill measure is a step in the right direction for the type of community values the WHA strives to uplift. If approved, this proposal would replace the existing 0.7 mill levy, creating a net additional levy of 1.68 mills. The WHA supports this millage, the long-desired investments it proposes, and the transformation it can have in connecting housing access and economic opportunity for so many in our county. For more information on the millage proposal, visit movingusforwardtogether.com. You can also check out this presentation slide deck here.

  • Coalition for Re-Envisioning Our Safety (CROS) – see endorsements here.

Back in April 2021, Ann Arbor City Council passed a resolution directing the City Administrator to develop an unarmed public safety response program by the end of the year. The city program has not yet been developed and implemented, but CROS is pushing forward by continuing with its outreach efforts and focusing on the actual logistical details of setting up the new program. The program, which is seeking $3 million in public funding, now has formal endorsements from over 850 individual supporters and over 40 local community organizations. The hope is, once a safety program is in place in Ann Arbor, to eventually replicate it throughout all of Washtenaw County. Read more on the CROS plan as well as the most recent news on what’s next for the Coalition.

  • Source of Income Protections in Michigan – see endorsements and Sign-on Letter here.

Under current Michigan law, there is no clear prohibition against a landlord refusing to accept Housing Choice Vouchers, veterans’ benefits, alimony, MDHHS cash assistance, or SSI/SSDI as part of a person’s legal total combined income. Source of Income protections legislation aims to change that. Bills have been introduced in the House and Senate to protect Michigan renters from discrimination based on their source of income (read the bill here.) Joining 20 other states, including Utah, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and most recently Illinois, the Michigan Legislature should protect renter’s civil rights throughout the state, no matter where they choose to live. The WHA joins the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH) and the Coalition for Expanding Housing Access (CEHA) in supporting this legislation and asks that the bills receive a committee hearing and get passed.

Did you know that Source of Income protections already exist in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti? Here’s a one-page summary the WHA pulled together about these protections.

  • Pledge for Affordable Housing – see endorsements and sign pledge here.

Don’t forget! The WHA asks organizations and individuals to take our Pledge for Affordable Housing. Our pledge outlines 7 core beliefs that we all must commit to as we push for #Housing4All. Join us in signing today and sharing with others.
